What is Education ?

Education is a discipline concerned with teaching and learning processes in schools or school-like contexts as opposed to nonformal and informal socialising approaches (e.g., rural development projects and education through parent-child relationships). Education may be defined as the transfer of a society's ideals and acquired knowledge. It is comparable to what social scientists refer to as socialisation or enculturation in this respect. Children are born without culture, whether they are conceived amid New Guinea tribespeople, Renaissance Florentines, or Manhattan's middle classes. Education is intended to help them learn a culture, influence their behaviour into maturity, and steer them toward their ultimate function in society. There is typically little formal learning—little of what one needs to know—in the most basic societies.
